        1. Welcome and Update from Elena

        Hello again, and a warm welcome to all the new subscribers
        who have joined us since the last issue!

        Well, it's been a full and frantic couple of weeks since the
        last issue.  Not only have I moved continents (Australia to
        the US -- just LOVE the California climate!), I've also learned
        to drive on the wrong side of the road in the process of
        apartment hunting.  Next weekend I move into my new place
        and start a new job on the Monday.  I know, so much for my
        shortlived full-time entrepreneurship.  Let's just say I got an
        offer I couldn't refuse.  For this reason, AHBBO will once again
        be taking a week's break after this issue.  It will return to a
        regular weekly schedule July 24.  Thanks for your
        understanding and patience while I get my life organized!

        Due to temporary pressures of time, I am also making a rare
        exception to my normal editorial policy of only running my
        own, original articles.  In keeping with the theme of the past
        couple of issues on MLM, I am running instead a wonderful
        article sent to me by Jackie Ulmer in response to my call for
        subscriber feedback on your experiences, good or bad,
        with MLM programs.   Thanks Jackie!

        This week's Letters to the Editor segment also sees a
        continuation of the MLM debate with more of your feedback.
        It seems that there IS gold in them thar hills, you just have
        to know where to dig!

        We also resume the AHBBO Build Your Own Website
        Tutorial this week with "How to find a free webhost".

        2. Home-Based Business Idea of the Week - Bumper

        This is the kind of business that might grow out of a conversation
        over a couple of beers at your favorite tavern. Imagine for a moment
        this scenario: someone suggests that the owner should sponsor
        a summer picnic or softball game. The question then comes up as
        to how to advertise it, and someone suggests bumper stickers.
        And the basics of a very lucrative business are set in motion.

        As you consider this idea for a source of income, your first
        decision will be whether to first line up people willing to "wear" the
        bumper stickers on their cars, or the business owners who will
        want to advertise in this manner.   Generally, you will find it easier
        to sell the business owner by telling them that 100 to 200 people
        were all set and willing to wear their bumper sticker advertisement.

        All this boils down to a recommendation that you talk to your
        friends, neighbors and co-workers first. Get as many of them as
        you can to agree to "wear" a bumper sticker. You might offer to
        pay them $10 for three months, or $5 for six weeks . With
        inducement of money just to put a bumper sticker on their cars or
        trucks, you won't have too many turndowns. Some people run an
        ad in their weekly shopper newspaper, advertising the fact that
        they pay money just for "wearing" a bumper sticker. And of
        course, don't overlook the pulling power of all the bulletin boards
        in your area businesses.

        This is an ideal business for constant free publicity write-ups in
        your local newspapers, plus interviews on radio and TV talk
        shows. At first, you'll want as many people as possible to "wear"
        bumper sticker ads. What you'll want to stress in any publicity
        write-ups or media interviews is the fact that you've got the
        "vehicles for exposure" lined up and organized so that any
        potential advertiser needs only to give you a call, and you can
        launch their advertising program immediately.

        Next, you check with a number of printers and determine the
        cost to have bumper stickers made to order. Generally, you
        should be able to get a thousand bumper stickers for $100 or
        less. Whatever the cost, this initial outlay should be
        absorbed by your charge to the advertiser.

        So let's suppose you've got 100 people lined up to "wear" one
        of these bumper stickers on their cars for six weeks. Figure
        the bumper stickers will cost $100. Now, the problem of what
        to charge the advertiser.

        You should always charge on a "per car" basis, i.e., on a
        basis of circulation, as newspapers do. So, you could charge
        $5 per car per week, with 100 cars. This comes out to $500
        per week, or $3,000 total over six weeks, from the advertiser.
        Subtract $100 for getting the bumper stickers made, and
        $500 as payment for the cars "wearing" the bumper stickers,
        and you would end up with a profit picture of $2,400 for those
        six weeks.

        In the beginning, you should be the one calling on potential
        advertisers and doing all the selling. Once you've got your first
        program organized and running smoothly, your next step is a
        natural multiplication of your efforts. Run an ad in your local
        paper for commission sales people. Brief them on the basics
        and get them out on the street selling advertisers for you.

        The best time to launch a business of this kind is during the
        fair weather seasons, or just in advance of general political
        elections in your area. Once established, however, the
        business can, and should, sustain itself year round.

        The selling "keys" to this kind of advertising are basically the
        same as those enumerated for "word of mouth" advertising.
        You've got people all over town spreading the word - talking
        about the advertiser. And these people are saturating the
        area with the advertiser's name and message wherever they go.

        It's easy! It's simple! And it works! Compared with other, more
        traditional advertising methods, bumper sticker advertising is
        very low in cost.

        One of the tricks of the trade is in using short, snappy, even
        humorous slogans or telegram styled messages. For instance:
        Anderson's Cafe - 6th and Main - That's where I'm going - How
        about you? Another idea is to make the lettering on the
        bumper stickers luminous to the headlights of the cars
        following. Most important, be sure to make your lettering easy
        to read, and the message easy to comprehend at one glance.

        Actually, you could start at the front of the yellow pages in
        your phone book and probably never run out of places ready
        to be sold on your plan of bumper sticker advertising.

        The important thing is to always be creative in your selling
        efforts. Always show the prospect how their business can grow
        from advertising in the manner you propose, and how your
        method is more positive, more responsive, and lower in
        cost than the more traditional advertising.

        Remember, too, the more clever or "catchy" the message
        on the bumper sticker, the more it will make people talk and
        respond. For ideas along these lines, go back to the yellow
        pages of your telephone book and read all those short, crispy
        one-liners .

        Remember also that advertising is a form of "brainwashing" and
        the more people see the message, the stronger that message
        is imprinted in their minds. Therefore, when they need or are
        in the market for the services or product offered by the
        advertiser, they'll quickly refer to the strongest, easiest-to-recall
        advertising message in their minds. And that, of course, means
        that if the prospects see a specific advertising message on the
        bumpers of the cars in front of them day after day, when they're
        ready to buy, that particular advertiser will be the one they will

        You can expand this business to include magnetic signs on
        the sides of cars, saddle-back signs on the back of cars, and
        even signs in the yards in residential neighborhoods. Whatever
        your approach, line up your "method of exposure," determine your
        costs and then go after the advertisers. It can be a very easy
        way to achieve real wealth and independence for yourself!

        3.  Feature Article - The Challenge

        I am concerned. No, I'm actually worried. No, better yet, I'm
        down right alarmed. And you should be, too, if you think about
        the situation at hand!

        Let's start with the bright side, the future that lies before
        us in Network Marketing. The stage is set, the seats are
        filling, the lighting is flawless, and the characters all know
        their lines! Or do they?

        Network Marketing, that once scandalous industry that brought
        shame and ridicule on many otherwise fine, upstanding citizens,
        has finally come of age. Just about every main stream business
        publication including The Wall Street Journal, Success
        Magazine, Fortune, Forbes, Inc, USA Today, Smart Money and
        more have written about our industry. And, the articles are

        We've made the breakthrough. We've become legitimate. We have
        books on the New York Times Bestseller list. Donald Trump is
        telling talk show hosts that if he started over, he would make
        his fortune through Network Marketing and former presidents are
        speaking at our conventions.

        Yes, the future certainly does look bright enough to send me in
        search of sunglasses. So, "what is the problem?" you ask. Why
        am I in a state of alarm? Three emerging trends threaten the
        core of our industry.

        First, everyday, a small, but very visible group of overzealous,
        under-educated and less than truthful representatives of our
        industry tarnish our name and hard fought integrity by telling
        others how they "went from welfare to millionaire overnight!" Or,
        how about this one, "I get paid for doing nothing." And, the
        granddaddy of them all, "Just sign up! You don't have to do
        anything, we'll build it for you!"

        It's downright disgusting. And, if that weren't bad enough, we
        also have some representatives out there blasting every company
        that isn't their own. Some are actually using this as a
        platform for building their business.

        It's the old "my dad is stronger than your dad" syndrome. Only
        this isn't happening on the school playground. It's happening
        in coffee shops, in large hotel presentations and on the

        And lastly, some of us have developed a self-righteous, holier-
        than-thou attitude directed at those who decline our opportunity.
        I have read posts on message boards and heard recounts on
        company voice mail about would-be sponsors who piously tell
        the prospect who says no thank you, "well, I'll need someone
        to wash my car and mow my grass someday."

        I actually read a message thread posted on the Internet over
        the course of two weeks between two feuding reps from the same
        company, name calling and slamming each other. It was a
        shameful display of the dark side of the MLM industry, and it
        was out there for everyone to read on the Internet.

        Oh, the Internet. The things I have seen on the Internet.
        Everything else actually pales in comparison. The excessive
        littering and spamming of Newsgroups, message boards and email
        lists has left our industry bruised and battered. Some boards
        and newsgroups have actually shut down because they are nothing
        more than a SPAM feeding frenzy for wayward Network Marketers.

        Now, don't misinterpret my words. I love the Internet and I
        love "shopping" my opportunity on the Internet...the right way.
        This means only posting to boards and groups that are designed
        for advertising business opportunities.  I don't believe in broadcasting
        to the masses through unsolicited emails, either.

        These practices, harmless though they may seem at the time,
        threaten the integrity and viability of our industry. They undermine
        all of the blood, sweat and tears that many veterans have shed
        fighting to legitimize and mainstream our industry.

        So, I have a challenge for all of you either in Network Marketing,
        regardless of length of time, and for all of you considering joining
        our wonderful industry. And my challenge is this:

        Look before you leap; think before you speak; evaluate every
        action that you take publicly that represents Network Marketing.

        What do I mean by this?

        Each time you represent your opportunity to someone, either in
        person, via the phone, on the Internet or whatever, think about
        the actions you are taking.

        Are you being honest and up front with people about the reality
        of the time and energy commitment involved in building a
        successful business? Do you make them aware that our business
        is one of consistency and persistence, or are you painting a
        picture of a get-rich-quick scheme?

        Are you acting with courtesy and integrity toward the individual
        and also the industry, leaving them with a positive feeling about
        you and the company and industry that you represent?

        Are you operating with an abundance mentality, realizing that
        of the billions of people on the planet, you will find partners to join
        you? Or, are you operating from a scarcity mentality, believing
        that you have to coerce the person you're prospecting into "your

        If the person you are dealing with has already been approached
        about your opportunity are you encouraging him or her to get
        back with that person and re-evaluate their options? Or are you
        giving them 50 reasons why signing up with you is the only way
        to be successful?

        Are you involved in email "spamming", filling the email boxes
        of hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting, uninterested parties
        with uninvited information?

        When a prospect says no do you act with dignity, courtesy and
        grace, leaving the door open in the future, or do you berate him or
        her for choosing not to join you?

        When you use the Internet to shop your business, are you
        engaging people as a warm, living, breathing human being, or
        coming at them as a robot only interested in what each person
        in cyberspace can do for you and your

        Every time you work toward building your business, think
        carefully about the words you say, the body language you
        use and the way that you leave each encounter. Would your
        mother be proud of you and your actions? If you can
        say yes, tremendous! If the answer is no, you have some
        reflecting to do.

        If each of us would use the "seventh generation theory" when
        building our business (meaning that each move we make affects
        seven generations after us) our industry will continue to thrive,
        build momentum and further credibility as we move into this
        new millennium, filled with hope and promise.

        What is the legacy you will leave behind in Network Marketing?
        What words will be spoken about you at local, regional and
        national company events?

        So, again, my challenge to you is to build a successful,
        respected business for yourself, your company and your
        industry via the high road, avoiding the low road at all cost. We
        need your commitment to uphold the integrity of our industry,
        now more than ever.

        If you have a list hosted by E-Groups you are no doubt
        already aware that E-Groups has been acquired by Yahoo!.

        What you may not realize, however, is that, in addition
        to acquiring E-Groups, Yahoo! has, in the process, and with
        breathtaking audacity, unilaterally usurped your control over
        your own copyrighted work.

        Cast your eye over this little gem from Yahoo!'s terms of
        service (http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/).  My comments
        are in the [square brackets]:


        (a) For purposes of the TOS [Terms of Service], "publicly
        accessible areas of the Service" are those accessible by the
        general public. By way of example, a publicly accessible area
        of the Service would include public Yahoo! Clubs and Yahoo!
        Message Boards [and public mailing lists such as those
        acquired from E-Groups], but would not include private Yahoo!
        Clubs or private Yahoo communication services such as
        Yahoo! Mail or Yahoo! Messenger.


        (c) With respect to all other Content you elect to post to other
        publicly accessible areas of the Service [such as mailing lists
        acquired from E-Groups], you grant Yahoo the royalty-free,
        perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sublicensable right

        5.  Pro-Motion Column - Answers for the "Pro in Motion"

        Q. I'm confused about the different titles I see behind
        business owners' names on the Internet. I understand that
        companies can have Presidents, but is a CEO the same as a
        President? How do I know what title to use for myself? (Ann)

        A. This is a good question since titles are so misused online
        by people trying to throw their importance around. I am
        underwhelmed and unimpressed with it. It seems it's always the
        amateurs who have the need to stress their own value - and worry
        about getting every ounce of credit. Good grief! Who cares?
        Don't these people know how that makes them look to anyone who
        is business savvy?

        Please don't make yourself look unprofessional in your online
        business by using phony titles! "CEO" (Chief Executive Officer)
        and "President" indicate an organization which has formal
        officers. The President may, or may not, be the CEO. If your
        business is not incorporated, with formal officers of the
        corporation listed - don't use them! Even a Limited Liability
        Company (LLC) does not have officers.

        In your role as a consumer - look at the company name. Is it
        followed by, "Inc." or one of the other indications of
        incorporation? If not, and the sales pitch is signed by a "CEO"
        or "President" - you're dealing with someone who is either
        trying to convince you their company is something it is not - or
        someone who doesn't have much knowledge of the real business

        There is nothing wrong with, "Owner." At least it's honest.

        several MLM programs over the last few years, and every one
        flopped for one reason: uplines that just recruit people and then

        finally found something that I believe 110% in. My upline is also
        the best!! They have been there for me through thick and thin, and
        just keep cheering me on.
